Whether your home sends waste to a municipal sewer or an on-site septic system changes how you should maintain it — and what happens when something goes wrong.
Most homes in New Jersey's denser towns connect to a municipal sewer via a private lateral. You maintain the lateral; the town maintains the main. Your job is keeping that lateral clear and sound.
In more rural parts of the region, homes use a septic tank and drain field on the property. These need periodic pumping and care, and a failed system is a major expense. When municipal sewer becomes available, many owners convert.
