Two different pumps often share a basement, and homeowners mix them up constantly. Knowing which is which matters when one fails.
A sump pump handles groundwater. It sits in a pit that collects water seeping in around the foundation, and pumps that clean water away from the house. It has nothing to do with your sewage.
A sewage ejector (or grinder pump) handles wastewater from fixtures located below the sewer line — a basement bathroom, for instance. It lifts that waste up to the level of the main sewer so it can drain out. When it fails, basement fixtures back up.
If a below-grade basement bathroom is backing up, the ejector is the likely culprit, not the main line. Diagnosing the right component saves time and money.
